Dear Ladies, Happy 8th of March!

Dear Colleagues,

March 8th is International Women's Day. It has been a big holiday in the Soviet Union, and now remains a public holiday and big day for the entire country.
Today, March 7, on the last working day before the holiday, one could see dressed up women with flowers all over the city. A nice day, indeed ;-) Men are doing their best to make us happy. I want to share this festive atmosphere with you, since this day is an international holiday.

Some   greeting cards for you: the one dating back to the 1970s  (warm memories and a light smile)
and a recent one.

You can see the change in the image and the interpretation of the holiday. The difference would be still more striking, if you look at what Google brings up.

Time goes on, life brings change,
but women were, are and will remain
the source of love, inspiration and creativity.

Happy 8th of March

and may you be happy every day of your life
as much as we are these days.

  1. Hi Val,
How marvelous it is! I visualized the scene and was filled with happiness!
I love all kinds of flowers; that's why I found this idea amazing.
Thanks for sharing this Happy 8th of March with us.
What about the weather these days? Is it still freezing?

    1. Hi Nihmat,

Yes, it was nice to see all the agitation.
      Do you celebrate this holiday?

    2. Sorry, I forgot to answer your question, Nihmat.
Yes, it is still freezing. We had - 5 C in Minsk, and my relatives in the North East
of Belarus reported - 20 C. But - 20 in March is different from - 20 in January.
It was so sunny and bright. In the sun it is melting already.

      Did you celebrate this holiday?

      Cheers,

      Val

  2. Hi Val,

Happy Women's Day to you, to all women and to us men too!

Yes, it is WOMEN's Day, but I want to celebrate it myself in pride too since without the women in my life and I am not to be the person I am now.

It is interesting to see how the celebration has changed over the last decades. What sticks me the most is the idea of independence from men (comparing the two images above). Nowadays, women don't depend on men to make them happy and proud of their being. Maybe just due recognition and respect is in order.

Hope everyone enjoy a wonderful celebration!

  3. Hi Hassan,

Thank you for your greetings and for the nice words you have said about women. Men, who appreciate what women do for him will be always getting what he wants from women. Could it be true the other way? ;-)

This year a jewelry chain came up with the promotion slogan, which can be loosely translated as "The way you make your woman happy on the 8th of March will be the way you will spend this year".

The interpretation of the change reflected in the cards is not exact. I simply can't paste here some of them, I've selected the most neutral. But if you copy-paste these Russian words "8 Марта открытки 2012" to Google-Images search, you will see a bit different transformation.

Men-Women... What an ancient topic! And still thrilling.

No, it's not independence from men. It's the freedom of choice. It's independence from stupid, ignorant, conservative, egoistic, irresponsible, etc. beings (I don't want to use the word "man" in this context). "Man" and "Woman" can be defined only in opposition to one another. When one starts behaving up to the high status associated with the word, the other does the same. There is no way to get to your gender role without an appropriate partner. A bird needs two wings to fly. If one is not playing his/her gender role, the second has to become unisex again.

    These talks are endless.

Yes, we do need men to make us happy.
